The Oxford Calligrapher
I'm delighted to announce that The Oxford Calligrapher has won the coveted award of Small Business Sunday Winner. I was recently presented with my certificate by former Dragon, retail entrepreneur and #SBS founder, Theo Paphitis.
The Oxford Calligrapher is now one of 4500 small businesses that Theo has personally chosen to be part of his community since 2010. He chooses 6 winners every Monday who have pitched their business on a Sunday evening Bia Instagram or X (Formerly Twitter). I was lucky enough to become a winner on my first pitch, where for many it takes a number of attempts to be chosen! It's a real honour to be recognised for the passion and hard work I put into bringing calligraphy joy to as many people as I can.

Healing Trauma: How Calligraphy Can Unlock the Body's Resilience
Introduction:
Trauma is a complex and deeply ingrained experience that can have profound effects on both the mind and body. It often leaves an imprint that resides within us long after the initial event has passed. In this blog, we will explore the concept of how trauma lives in the body and how the therapeutic practice of learning calligraphy can aid in the healing process.
Understanding How Trauma Lives in the Body:
Trauma can be both emotional and physical, and the body has a remarkable capacity to remember and hold onto these experiences. Here's how trauma lives in the body:
Muscle Tension: Trauma can lead to chronic muscle tension and pain. The body's fight-or-flight response can become chronically activated, resulting in tense muscles, headaches, and other physical symptoms.
Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation: Trauma can disrupt the body's autonomic nervous system, leading to symptoms such as a heightened state of alertness (hypervigilance), sleep disturbances, and mood swings.
Body Memory: Trauma can be stored as somatic memories in the body. Certain sensations, smells, or even physical postures can trigger traumatic memories and emotional reactions.
Emotional Regulation: Trauma can affect emotional regulation, leading to mood disorders like anxiety, depression, and emotional numbness.
The Therapeutic Potential of Calligraphy:
Learning calligraphy can offer a therapeutic avenue for addressing the physical and emotional residues of trauma:
Mindfulness and Body Awareness:
Calligraphy requires concentration and mindful awareness of the body's movements. Practitioners learn to focus on the present moment, which can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and hypervigilance.
Expressing Emotions Non-Verbally:
Calligraphy offers a non-verbal means of emotional expression. The act of creating art can help individuals process and release pent-up emotions associated with trauma.
Somatic Healing:
The deliberate strokes of calligraphy can be a form of self-soothing and relaxation. It can help release physical tension and promote somatic healing.
Empowerment and Self-Expression:
Calligraphy allows individuals to regain a sense of control and empowerment over their bodies and emotions. Creating art can be a form of self-expression, fostering a positive sense of identity.
Community and Connection:
Participating in calligraphy classes or workshops can provide a sense of community and connection with others who may have experienced trauma. Sharing the creative process can be therapeutic and healing.
Getting Started with Calligraphy for Healing:
Seek Professional Guidance: Consider enrolling in calligraphy classes or workshops led by a skilled instructor who understands the therapeutic potential of the art form.
Create a Safe Space: Establish a dedicated and comfortable space for your calligraphy practice, free from distractions.
Set Realistic Goals: Approach calligraphy with patience and self-compassion. Set achievable goals and acknowledge your progress.
Embrace the Process: Focus on the process of creating rather than the end result. Allow yourself to explore different styles and techniques.
Conclusion
Trauma's impact on the body and mind can be profound, but healing is possible. Learning calligraphy is one way to engage in a therapeutic practice that promotes mindfulness, emotional expression, and somatic healing. By harnessing the power of art and creativity, individuals can embark on a journey of self-discovery and recovery, using calligraphy as a tool to unlock the body's resilience and promote overall well-being. Remember that healing from trauma is a unique and personal journey, and finding the right therapeutic practices that resonate with you is essential.
