The Oxford Calligrapher is a Small Business Sunday Winner!

I'm delighted to announce that The Oxford Calligrapher has won the coveted award of Small Business Sunday Winner. I was recently presented with my certificate by former Dragon, retail entrepreneur and #SBS founder, Theo Paphitis.

The Oxford Calligrapher is now one of 4500 small businesses that Theo has personally chosen to be part of his community since 2010. He chooses 6 winners every Monday who have pitched their business on a Sunday evening Bia Instagram or X (Formerly Twitter). I was lucky enough to become a winner on my first pitch, where for many it takes a number of attempts to be chosen! It's a real honour to be recognised for the passion and hard work I put into bringing calligraphy joy to as many people as I can.

5 Mindset Shifts for Calligraphy Business Owners

5 Mindset Shifts for Calligraphers in Business - How current and aspiring calligraphy artists can help themselves to success...

Introduction:

Transitioning from a calligraphy artist to a successful business owner involves more than just honing your artistic skills; it demands a significant shift in your mindset. For many calligraphers, the art of business can be as intricate and nuanced as the scripts they create. This blog post is designed to navigate you through five critical mindset shifts. These changes are vital for any calligrapher looking to turn their passion into a thriving business. Each point not only outlines the necessary shift but also provides a practical tip for implementation, ensuring that these aren't just concepts, but actionable steps towards success in your calligraphy business.

8 Reasons
  1. Embracing Entrepreneurship Beyond Artistry:

The journey from artist to entrepreneur can be challenging. It involves recognizing that being successful in the calligraphy business means wearing multiple hats. Besides being an artist, you also need to be a marketer, a salesperson, and a strategist. This mindset shift is about expanding your view from just creating art to also managing a business.

Practical Tip: Reserve time each week to learn about a different aspect of business management. This could involve taking online courses in marketing, reading books about entrepreneurship, or attending workshops on business strategy.

  2. The Value of Your Art: Understanding Pricing and Worth:

Many artists struggle with pricing their work, often undervaluing what they offer. The shift needed here is about understanding and acknowledging the true worth of your calligraphy. This encompasses not just the physical materials and time spent, but also the years of skill, practice, and unique creativity you bring to your art.

Practical Tip: Conduct a thorough market analysis to understand what similar artists charge, then factor in your unique selling points. Ensure your pricing reflects the quality, time spent, and the artistic value of your work.

  3. Cultivating a Growth Mindset: Learning from Success and Failure:

Adopting a growth mindset means looking at every business experience as a learning opportunity. Successes teach what to repeat and amplify, while failures highlight areas for improvement. This perspective fosters resilience, an essential trait for business longevity.

Practical Tip: After each project, take time to reflect. Write down what worked, what didn't, and how you can improve. Treat each experience as a valuable lesson in your ongoing business education.

  4. Networking and Community Building:

In the business world, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Networking isn’t just about pushing your business; it's about building genuine relationships that can provide support, knowledge, and sometimes lead to collaborative opportunities.

Practical Tip: Actively engage in community events, online forums, and local business groups. The goal is to build relationships and collaborations that are mutually beneficial and enriching for your calligraphy business.

  5. Balancing Creativity with Practical Business Management:

Running a successful business without losing your creative spirit can be a delicate balancing act. This involves effectively managing the practical aspects of your business, such as finances and client relations, while still making time for creative development and exploration.

Practical Tip: Implement tools and systems to streamline business operations. Use digital planners, scheduling tools, and automated systems to handle administrative tasks, freeing up more time for your creative work.

Conclusion: By embracing these mindset shifts, you position yourself not just as a calligrapher but as a savvy business owner. Each point provides a pathway for transforming your artistic passion into a viable and profitable calligraphy business. Your journey in integrating these shifts is not only about business growth but also personal and professional development. Share your stories or any additional insights, as your experiences could be the beacon for another artist embarking on a similar path.
